Dubai Can Refill Stations: How to Build a Reusable Bottle Routine

DUBAI CAN • REFILL FOR LIFE

A reusable bottle works best when you know where the next refill is coming from.

Dubai has made that easier with a city-wide network of free drinking-water refill stations. Here is how to turn the infrastructure into a routine you actually use.

Carrying a reusable water bottle is easy. Remembering to refill it when you are out for the day is the part that often breaks the habit.

That is why Dubai Can refill stations are useful beyond the water they dispense: they make refilling a visible part of moving around the city. Dubai Can's Refill for Life initiative reported in February 2025 that its network had grown to 53 refill stations, dispensed more than 15 million litres of drinking water and helped avoid the equivalent of more than 30 million 500 ml single-use plastic water bottles since its 2022 launch.

Those figures come from the Government of Dubai Media Office. The same source says the stations provide free drinking water, are regularly tested to relevant Dubai Municipality, GCC and World Health Organization standards, and maintain the water at 10°C.

Where are Dubai Can refill stations?

The network is spread across public places including beaches, parks, transport areas and popular destinations. The official Dubai Can map has listed locations around Dubai Marina, JLT, JBR, Bluewaters, Expo City and other parts of the emirate.

Tip: locations can change, so use the official map or Dubai Can information rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved list.

The 30-second refill plan

Before leaving home, answer these four questions. Tap each one as you go.

1. Is my bottle full before I leave?

Starting full means your first refill is a top-up later, not an emergency purchase ten minutes into the day.

2. Where will I be around midday?

If your route passes a park, beach, mall district or another area with a Dubai Can station, make that your planned refill point.

3. Will I be outdoors or training?

Hot conditions and exercise can change fluid needs. Plan access to water rather than assuming one fixed amount suits every day.

4. Can I refill before the journey home?

A final refill before a commute is an easy cue: station, tap, refill, leave.

Make the station the cue, not the goal

A good refill routine is less about chasing a number and more about attaching a useful action to places you already visit. Try pairing a refill with a repeatable cue:

  • Metro or commute: check your bottle before starting the next leg of the journey.
  • Lunch: refill when you leave the table or office.
  • Beach or park: locate the refill point when you arrive, not when the bottle is already empty.
  • Training: arrive with water and identify where you can refill afterwards.
  • Heading home: top up before getting into the car or onto public transport.

The useful behaviour is simple: carry, refill, repeat. A refill station removes one piece of friction, but the bottle still needs to come with you.

How a 750 ml bottle fits into the routine

A 750 ml bottle gives you a known container size, which can make refills easier to notice. With Dropple's 750 ml hydration tracking bottle, the Twist To Track lid lets you mark a completed refill physically rather than opening an app.

Four full 750 ml bottles equal 3 litres mathematically, but 3 litres is not a universal daily water target. Individual needs vary with factors such as climate, activity, health, diet, age, pregnancy and medication. Dropple's tracker records refills; it does not prescribe how much any individual should drink.

Try a one-day refill challenge

□ Start: leave home with your reusable bottle filled.

□ Map: identify one official refill point that fits your route.

□ Refill: use the station when you pass it rather than waiting until later.

□ Track: mark the refill if your bottle has a tracker, or simply note it mentally.

□ Repeat: decide which cue worked well enough to use again tomorrow.

Why this matters in Dubai in 2026

Refilling also sits within Dubai's wider move toward reuse. Dubai Municipality's guidance on Executive Council Resolution No. 124 of 2023 encourages alternatives to single-use products, while the phased restrictions expanded again from 1 January 2026 to cover additional single-use plastic products such as plastic plates, food containers, tableware, beverage cups and plastic lids.

That does not mean Dubai has banned all plastic water bottles. The more useful takeaway is that the city's policy direction and refill infrastructure both make reusable habits increasingly practical.

Refill rather than replace

The sustainability value of a reusable bottle comes from actually reusing it. Keeping a bottle in circulation, cleaning it properly and replacing an individual component where appropriate can be more practical than treating the entire product as disposable.

Dropple offers a replacement Twist To Track lid and replacement bottle body, so an issue with one replaceable part does not automatically mean buying a complete new bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Are Dubai Can refill stations free?

Yes. Dubai Can describes the Refill for Life stations as providing free access to drinking water at locations across Dubai.

Is the water at Dubai Can stations safe to drink?

The Government of Dubai Media Office states that the stations adhere to hygiene requirements and that the drinking water is regularly tested to relevant Dubai Municipality, GCC and World Health Organization standards.

Do I need a special bottle to use a refill station?

No. The initiative is designed to encourage people to refill reusable water bottles. Use a clean bottle suitable for drinking water.

Does carrying a 750 ml bottle mean I should drink four bottles every day?

No. Four 750 ml bottles equal 3 litres, but that is only arithmetic, not a personalised recommendation. Fluid needs vary. If you have a health condition or questions about your intake, seek appropriate professional advice.

MAKE REFILLING EASIER

One bottle. A known refill point. A repeatable cue.

That is enough to turn Dubai's refill network into an everyday habit.
